Lab owners and technicians are talking about multilayer zirconia—here’s what they’re saying…
W
ord of mouth is an important aspect of product promotion in any industry. In dentistry, the phrase resonates with even greater influence, as dental professionals tend to respect and appreciate the words and recommendations of their colleagues and peers who have used the product in actual clinical practice.
The dental industry is a tight-knit community and word gets around quickly. When a product comes along that creates excitement among dental professionals, you’ll hear about it. Take Cercon xt ML and the entire Cercon family of restorative materials, for that matter. The Cercon family has garnered quite a bit of praise among those who have experience with it in the dental lab.
Associate Professor Edwin Kee, MCDT, TE, of the Louisiana State University School of Dentistry touches upon three primary virtues of Cercon xt ML: esthetics, strength, and sintering speed: “Cercon xt ML provides a natural blend from incisal to cervical. It provides translucency to mimic nature and does not compromise strength and integrity of the material. Sintering of Cercon xt ML is no different than sintering Cercon ht and Cercon xt. For 3-unit bridges you can sinter in fast speed. Cercon xt ML helps lab technicians provide beautiful and strong restorations to dentists and patients.” Patrick Staggs, owner of Staggs Dental Lab in McCoole, Maryland, echoes Edwin’s sentiments: “I am super excited to add Cercon xt ML to my arsenal of zirconias. It is a beautiful zirconia. It is true to shade and the gradient within the disc is outstanding. Being able to use the same sintering cycle as Cercon ht and Cercon xt is also a great feature.”
“The new Cercon xt ML is smart by design”
Devaughn Fraser, Director at Highland Dental Laboratory in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, considers Cercon xt ML to be the new benchmark against which all other multilayered lab-based restorative materials will be measured against, adding, “This great new product picks up where the industry left off. As the name suggests, it is a multilayer with some innate differences. Some industry materials have layered products, usually three to four layers. Many of these are layered in equal distribution—each layer being very identifiable from the preceding. However, the new Cercon xt ML is smart by design, featuring the body color being 60% of the height, and then two beautifully blending transition layers, and then capped off with a unique incisal for each 16 classic shades.” Fraser continues, “Having been able to evaluate this material in the dental laboratory, I remember remarking ‘this looks just like a tooth.’ One would think that such statements would be customary in a lab, but I can assure you that it is not. This product, coupled with modern design and milling capability is allowing dental technicians to finish better looking restorations, faster.”
